Haworth's Energy Story
Haworth strives to be a sustainable corporation, which has earned them the LEED-NC Gold Certification from the
United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
In order for Haworth to achieve this certification, they have installed angled windows to let natural light into their facility. They also have changed all of their light bulbs in their headquarters from T12 to T8 and T5 energy efficient light bulbs. Each of the lightbulbs have sensors, which are currently set to turn off 15-minutes after no motion has been detected.
Because of Haworth's commitment to the environment, they have achieved a zero-waste-to-landfill (ZWTL) status globally. What this means is that no byproducts from their production processes end up in a landfill. As of 2012, Haworth's global facilities diverted all waste from going to a landfill, which resulted in all of their sites being landfill-free.
As of 2014, Haworth's recycling program has profited $1.3 billion from the 18 million pounds of recycled materials that they have sold to other companies. Sticking to their commitment, when they opened up their new headquarters in Holland, MI, the company used 80% of their old facility to save resources and money.
One of the most unique features Haworth's Holland, MI facility has The LiveRoof. The LiveRoof was chosen because it came fully vegetated at installation, and its soil elevation technology allowed for sharing of water, nutrients and beneficial organisms across the entire rooftop for natural function and natural beauty. It also minimizes hot, wet, and dry zones, which makes this facility very energy efficient. Haworth recycled plastic scraps from their Holland facility into the LiveRoof, thereby helping to close their waste loop.
Something To Take Home
For starters, you can install energy efficient light bulbs (LED) in your business or residence to save energy and money. Also, you contact your local waste management company to learn about their recycling programs and how you can contribute to lessening your carbon footprint. You could also turn down your thermostat a few degrees, which will conserve energy and reduce your monthly bills.
